Rediscovering the Benefits of Apprenticeship

Professional development is where our people take an active participative role in the project during a transformation effort. Our industry is one that grows and changes rapidly. Many organizations discover they lack the experienced personal necessary to help grow and develop their staff and refine their processes. Craft and trade based industries still have an apprenticeship program where apprentice follow and learn from a master. Unfortunately hope is often our industry's professional development strategy,  hope  staff will pick up all the skills they require on their own or through a few training courses and osmosis. Professional development brings back the opportunity for the those adopting new practices – the apprentice - to learn from a master or mentor and avoid expensive and avoidable mistakes. This is a practice we have employed with many of our clients.

Case: Cellular Telephone Billing

A successful vendor of cellular telephone billing systems needed to transform both its product and processes to satisfy meteoric growth. Two experienced WSA staff joined a young development team as the project manager and project engineer.  Not only did WSA staff perform their job roles, but also the work that is expected of senior experienced staff, developing the staff. Through a combination of training, new processes, and leadership, the team was able to quickly rise to the exciting challenge of rapid growth.
